Probing multipartite entanglement in a coupled Jaynes-Cummings system
We show how to probe multipartite entanglement in coupled Jaynes-Cummings
cells where the degrees of freedom are the electronic energies of each of the
atoms in separate single-mode cavities plus the single-mode fields
themselves. Specifically we propose probing the combined system as though it is
a dielectric medium. The spectral properties and transition rates directly
reveal multipartite entanglement signatures. It is found that the Hilbert space
of the cell system can be confined to the totally symmetric subspace of two
states only that are maximally-entangled W states with 2N degrees of freedom
De los niños a los padres: El inventario de percepción de conductas parentales
The present study explores the psychometric properties of the Parent Perception Inventory (Hazzard et al., 1983), instrument elaborated to describe, with a global approach, the parenting practices just as they are experienced and perceived by the own children. In a sample of 276 students from the 2do to the 6to degree of primary of a private school, the cluster analysis applied confirmed the internal structure of the inventory. On the other hand, the gender of the students as much as the school degree explained little variance in the differences in scores. These differences were, in general, not significant. On the other hand, regarding the psychometric propierties, (1) the analysis supported the validity of the assumed bi-dimensional structure; and (2) the reliability is acceptable.

Global citizenship as the completion of cosmopolitanism
A conception of global citizenship should not be viewed as separate from, or synonymous with, the cosmopolitan moral orientation, but as a primary component of it. Global citizenship is fundamentally concerned with individual
moral requirements in the global frame. Such requirements, framed here as belonging to the category of individual cosmopolitanism, offer guidelines on right action in the context of global human community. They are complementary
to the principles of moral cosmopolitanism – those to be used in assessing the justice of global institutions and practices – that have been emphasised by cosmopolitan political theorists. Considering principles of individual and moral cosmopolitanism together can help to provide greater clarity concerning individual duties in the absence of fully global institutions, as well as clarity on individual obligations of justice in relation to emerging and still-developing trans-state institutions
Efficacy of Online Training for Improving Camp Staff Competency
Preparing competent staff is a critical issue within the camp community. This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of an online course for improving staff competency in camp healthcare practices among college-aged camp staff and a comparison group (N = 55). We hypothesized that working in camp would increase competency test scores due to opportunities for staff to experientially apply knowledge learned online. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyse the cross-level effects of a between-individuals factor (assignment to experimental or comparison group) and within-individual effects of time (pre-test, post-test #1, and post-test #2) on online course test scores. At post-test #2, the difference in average test scores between groups was ~30 points, with the treatment group scoring lower on average than the comparison group. Factors that may have influenced these findings are explored, including fatigue and the limited durability of online learning. Recommendations for research and practice are discussed
Non-Gaussian states for continuous variable quantum computation via Gaussian maps
We investigate non-Gaussian states of light as ancillary inputs for
generating nonlinear transformations required for quantum computing with
continuous variables. We consider a recent proposal for preparing a cubic phase
state, find the exact form of the prepared state and perform a detailed
comparison to the ideal cubic phase state. We thereby identify the main
challenges to preparing an ideal cubic phase state and describe the gates
implemented with the non-ideal prepared state. We also find the general form of
operations that can be implemented with ancilla Fock states, together with
Gaussian input states, linear optics and squeezing transformations, and
homodyne detection with feed forward, and discuss the feasibility of continuous
variable quantum computing using ancilla Fock states.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Tuberculosis
Asserts that despite progress in controlling tuberculosis (TB), the decline in incidence has been disappointing, pointing to the need for new strategies and more effective tools. HIV/AIDS is one factor that challenges effective control of TB, especially in Southern African countries. Three key elements are needed to achieve effective TB control and to meet the Sustainable Development Goals: (1) early and accurate diagnosis and drug-sensitivity testing, (2) patient access to and completion of effective treatment, and (3) prevention of progression from latent infection to disease. Prevention requires vaccination and screening of individual at high risk as well as interventions such as air disinfection and the use of masks and respirators in hospitals and other congregate settings. Recommendations stress the need to strengthen health systems in high-burden countries by emphasizing community-based care over hospital care; to improve information systems to ensure patient adherence and manage medication supply chains; and to invest in research to develop the necessary interventions. Fundamentally, current global TB control strategies must undergo revision and receive significant research funding
Emission-Line Galaxies from the Hubble Space Telescope Probing Evolution and Reionization Spectroscopically (PEARS) Grism Survey. II: The Complete Sample
We present a full analysis of the Probing Evolution And Reionization
Spectroscopically (PEARS) slitess grism spectroscopic data obtained with the
Advanced Camera for Surveys on HST. PEARS covers fields within both the Great
Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) North and South fields, making it
ideal as a random survey of galaxies, as well as the availability of a wide
variety of ancillary observations to support the spectroscopic results. Using
the PEARS data we are able to identify star forming galaxies within the
redshift volume 0< z<1.5. Star forming regions in the PEARS survey are
pinpointed independently of the host galaxy. This method allows us to detect
the presence of multiple emission line regions (ELRs) within a single galaxy.
1162 Ha, [OIII] and/or [OII] emission lines have been identified in the PEARS
sample of ~906 galaxies down to a limiting flux of ~1e-18 erg/s/cm^2. The ELRs
have also been compared to the properties of the host galaxy, including
morphology, luminosity, and mass. From this analysis we find three key results:
1) The computed line luminosities show evidence of a flattening in the
luminosity function with increasing redshift; 2) The star forming systems show
evidence of disturbed morphologies, with star formation occurring predominantly
within one effective (half-light) radius. However, the morphologies show no
correlation with host stellar mass; and 3) The number density of star forming
galaxies with M_* > 1e9} M_sun decreases by an order of magnitude at z<0.5
relative to the number at 0.5<z<0.9 in support of the argument for galaxy
downsizing.Comment: Submitted. 48 pages. 19 figures. Accepted to Ap
Amenability of groups and -sets
This text surveys classical and recent results in the field of amenability of
groups, from a combinatorial standpoint. It has served as the support of
courses at the University of G\"ottingen and the \'Ecole Normale Sup\'erieure.
The goals of the text are (1) to be as self-contained as possible, so as to
serve as a good introduction for newcomers to the field; (2) to stress the use
of combinatorial tools, in collaboration with functional analysis, probability
etc., with discrete groups in focus; (3) to consider from the beginning the
more general notion of amenable actions; (4) to describe recent classes of
examples, and in particular groups acting on Cantor sets and topological full
groups
Near-field interactions between metal nanoparticle surface plasmons and molecular excitons in thin-films: part I: absorption
In this and the following paper (parts I and II, respectively), we systematically study the interactions between surface plasmons of metal nanoparticles (NPs) with excitons in thin-films of organic media. In an effort to exclusively probe near-field interactions, we utilize spherical Ag NPs in a size-regime where far-field light scattering is negligibly small compared to absorption. In part I, we discuss the effect of the presence of these Ag NPs on the absorption of the embedding medium by means of experiment, numerical simulations, and analytical calculations, all shown to be in good agreement. We observe absorption enhancement in the embedding medium due to the Ag NPs with a strong dependence on the medium permittivity, the spectral position relative to the surface plasmon resonance frequency, and the thickness of the organic layer. By introducing a low index spacer layer between the NPs and the organic medium, this absorption enhancement is experimentally confirmed to be a near field effect In part II, we probe the impact of the Ag NPs on the emission of organic molecules by time-resolved and steady-state photoluminescence measurements
Delayed Effects of Acute Radiation Exposure in a Murine Model of the H-ARS: Multiple-Organ Injury Consequent to <10 Gy Total Body Irradiation
The threat of radiation exposure from warfare or radiation accidents raises the need for appropriate animal models to study the acute and chronic effects of high dose rate radiation exposure. The goal of this study was to assess the late development of fibrosis in multiple organs (kidney, heart, and lung) in survivors of the C57BL/6 mouse model of the hematopoietic-acute radiation syndrome (H-ARS). Separate groups of mice for histological and functional studies were exposed to a single uniform total body dose between 8.53 and 8.72 Gy of gamma radiation from a Cs radiation source and studied 1-21 mo later. Blood urea nitrogen levels were elevated significantly in the irradiated mice at 9 and 21 mo (from ∼22 to 34 ± 3.8 and 69 ± 6.0 mg dL, p < 0.01 vs. non-irradiated controls) and correlated with glomerosclerosis (29 ± 1.8% vs. 64 ± 9.7% of total glomeruli, p < 0.01 vs. non-irradiated controls). Glomerular tubularization and hypertrophy and tubular atrophy were also observed at 21 mo post-total body irradiation (TBI). An increase in interstitial, perivascular, pericardial and peribronchial fibrosis/collagen deposition was observed from ∼9-21 mo post-TBI in kidney, heart, and lung of irradiated mice relative to age-matched controls. Echocardiography suggested decreased ventricular volumes with a compensatory increase in the left ventricular ejection fraction. The results indicate that significant delayed effects of acute radiation exposure occur in kidney, heart, and lung in survivors of the murine H-ARS TBI model, which mirrors pathology detected in larger species and humans at higher radiation doses focused on specific organs
